The Race for Attorney General
Staying In Touch
Having served as Attorney General for two terms, I know the value of checking with, and trusting the instincts of, local leaders and opinion shapers before committing to major decisions that affect our common purpose.
In keeping with that trust I have traveled the state over the past couple of months to resume an open dialog with republican leaders and grassroots activists who were so important to me during my two terms as Attorney General. I have carefully listened to your concerns and suggestions about the future direction of our state. During this dialog I shared my thoughts and ideas about why I want to be the chief legal officer of our great state. As I prepare to become a candidate in 2016 you may view this short VIDEO which shares a few of those ideas.
Based on the encouragement I have received from many of you I will be a candidate for Attorney General in 2016. Conversations with you have given me a unique perspective on the challenges our state faces. I am ready to offer creative ideas and sensible solutions as the state’s chief legal officer and consumer protection leader.
My priorities for the Attorney General’s office include:
Protecting consumers from increasingly sophisticated scams involving new technologies
Protecting individual privacy from unnecessary government and commercial intrusion
Protecting against regulatory overreach from the federal government
Protecting taxpayers from covering the costs of smoking related illnesses that tobacco companies are obligated to pay
Protecting victims of abuse and reducing the cycle of Rx drug addiction while increasing access to treatment
Support for the Top of the Ticket
My electoral record shows that I can help bring votes to everyone on the ticket in 2016. At the time of my re-election to a second term as Attorney General in 2004 the trust the voters placed in me resulted in the highest vote total for a state elected official in Indiana history. I defeated former Secretary of State and Indianapolis Mayor-elect Joe Hogsett in a heavily contested campaign. I am one of the very few Republicans to carry Marion County in recent years and I have also exceeded the vote totals of every governor candidate with whom I shared the ballot.
Many of you were responsible in a number of ways for the success of my campaigns for which I remain grateful.
Politics as usual can no longer be condoned at any level of government. Voters are now more aware of what government is doing and what government should do. Elected officials must be attentive to the will of the people if they are to be successful. It is in such an environment that I believe my record of service belongs. It is important to me to be an office holder who keeps his word. I tried to do so previously as Attorney General and I will continue to do so in the future if I am so fortunate to serve in that office again.
Our State Government
Governor Pence and Governor Daniels before him, with the legal assistance of Attorney General Zoeller; and our Republican legislators have done a tremendous job of leading our state through tumultuous economic times. But even with their best efforts our state will face great challenges beyond 2016. Creative plans and ideas will be necessary. I believe the mutual trust I share with folks across our state, built up during my previous time as Attorney General and rekindled over the past three months, would allow me as the state’s top lawyer to provide the necessary legal guidance to carry these plans and ideas forward in a transparent and successful fashion.
Building a Great Team
When I became Attorney General in 2001 many challenges were placed before me. Gas gougers had taken advantage of the panic that had followed the 9-11 attacks. And telemarketers, with the help of their lobbyists had shattered the peaceful silence that used to accompany the family dinner hour.
My new team went to work and we built one of the most successful administrations the Attorney General’s office has known. The changes and improvements made to the office were far reaching and most of you are familiar with the RESULTS.
Working with Our Legislature
Because of our many successes in the AG’s office the legislature frequently asked me to take on new programs and enhance existing ones. In addition to creating a unit to enforce telephone privacy, we added an Identity Theft and Homeowner Protection units and greatly expanded the outreach efforts of the state’s Unclaimed Property division which resulted in a return of $100 million to Indiana households.
Ready to Serve From Day One
Through the course of my previous accomplishments and challenges I have gained a level of knowledge and experience with our state government that will be instrumental to future success as the state’s chief legal officer. This level of executive legal experience would allow me to hit the ground running. I have worked with many of our state’s leaders and will bring that experience to the job on Day One.
Early Years on the Family Farm and Owning a Small Business
Many of you also know that I was born in Lafayette and grew up on our family farm near Hebron in northwest Indiana. My mother was a school teacher and as you can imagine the importance placed on receiving a good education was paramount in our home. From the business community to the family farm I have a good understanding of the importance of ensuring that our state has a regulatory climate that is conducive to successful businesses, both large and small. At the same time I have demonstrated the courage and conviction to stand up for Indiana consumers when they have been cheated or harassed by unfair business practices, telemarketers and price gougers. Learn more about my experience.
As my campaign moves forward over the next several months, I hope that many of you share your insights with me on the campaign trail, whether at your local events or via EMAIL. If you have an event that we can work into our schedule please make sure and pass that information on to me at our CONTACT PAGE. And if you agree with me about the future direction of our state and my ability to support our governor and legislators as their chief legal officer I ask that you join our team.
